Sport and Sophrology: When the Mind Helps the Body

It was in Grenoble that sophrology began to make a name for itself in 1968, during the Winter Olympic Games. Doctor Raymond Abrezol developed sports sophrology to support the Swiss ski team. As the techniques proved effective, other sports adopted and adapted these methods to their discipline.

The origins of sports sophrology

Sophrology has a strong connection with sport. In 1968, at the Grenoble Olympics, Doctor Abrezol used sophrology techniques to help athletes prepare mentally. The results were so convincing that the approach spread to many other disciplines.

How sophrology helps athletes

Sophrology helps athletes:
  • Manage pre-competition stress and anxiety
  • Improve concentration and focus
  • Visualise success and positive outcomes
  • Recover more effectively
  • Build confidence and mental resilience

A tool for everyone

You do not need to be a high-level athlete to benefit from sophrology. Whether you run, swim, play team sports or simply want to stay active, sophrology can help you perform better and enjoy your sport more.
