Relieving pain - 14 January 2020 Relieving pain Pain is essentially a matter of message. [S1] Until 11am, See life in blue on France Bleu Isère. We see life in blue and then we are also going to relieve ourselves of pain, is that right, Eric?
[S2] Absolutely, so thanks to our well-being advice guest, every Tuesday, we have the joy of welcoming Ghislaine Morin, Sophrologist. Hello.
[S3] Hello Erika, hello Philippe, hello everyone.
[S1] So indeed, with sophrology, thanks to you we are learning what it consists of, how it can help us. It really is a therapy and today, you are going to explain to us how we can relieve pain. Certain types of pain, all pain?
[S3] Well, whether it is acute pain or chronic pain, perhaps we should first recall that pain is essentially a matter of message. There is a signal that travels from the part of the body that is attacked up to the brain, where it will be interpreted. So that is where the message becomes pain. Our brain, depending on the intensity of this message, will determine the intensity and the location of the pain. So the aim in sophrology, in pain management, will be to reformat the message conveyed. We will try to reduce its response in order to relieve the pain. And so I do insist, we are working to relieve pain and not to eliminate it.
[S1] There we go, so that is more a matter for the medical profession when it comes to treating pain. So we will still be able to relieve this pain. So for that we will first of all do a small exercise in two stages. First of all, the first step will be to define the pain and to delimit its extent. And secondly, we will relieve the pain while also trying to reduce it in favour of well-being.
[S3] So first of all, what we are going to do is learn to know the pain better. For that, we will establish what we call the identity card, calling on our 5 senses. This exercise, we will do it after a basic sophrology session, that is to say a state of relaxation where we close our eyes while breathing regularly, and we will ask you to describe first of all the shape we would give to this pain: whether we would see this pain with a round, smooth, angular or pointed shape. We will also look at the temperature: hot, cold, icy. We will also look at its smell. We will compare it to a sound: high-pitched, strident, continuous or intermittent, in waves. We will even imagine the taste: sweet, bitter, sour or corrosive.
[S1] We define the pain. We give substance to this pain and afterwards we will localise and delimit it.
[S3] So for that we will first of all visualise exactly the point of contact, where the pain is located, visualise it with the characteristics we have just given. And then afterwards, we will try to delimit, to enclose this pain with a barrier, like an impassable barrier. And so under these conditions, we will relieve the pain by reducing it. For example, if we have pain that is located in the left shoulder, we will observe the same point on the right side, in the right shoulder, and above all the comfort that prevails on that right side of the shoulder, and we will focus on this comfort, on the well-being that the right shoulder can radiate compared with the left shoulder.
[S3] And then we will use abdominal breathing to act on these two zones. That is to say, with each in-breath we will try to amplify the sensation of well-being in the non-painful part, and then on the out-breath we will try to restrict the painful zone. So we will reduce the area of action until it becomes no more than a small point, and that small painful point is reduced. In this way, we can control the pain better.
[S1] We can really regain the upper hand, control the effects of this pain, correct the message that the brain interprets and therefore compartmentalise this pain, reduce its extent and soothe it. Ghislaine, we can listen to all of that again on the website francebleu.fr. And then the good news too is that we will meet again next week.
[S3] Yes, absolutely, see you next week.

Viewpoints
1. Understanding pain as a message
* Pain is a nerve message interpreted by the brain. Sophrology aims to reformat the subjective signal, to relieve and not to eliminate (which is the domain of the medical profession).
2. Two-step exercise: the identity card of pain
* Step 1: characterise the pain using the five senses - shape (round, smooth, angular, pointed), temperature (hot, cold, icy), smell, sound (high-pitched, strident, continuous, in waves), taste (sweet, bitter, sour, corrosive).
* Locate the exact point of pain and delimit it with an impassable barrier.
3. Transferring attention and breathing
* Focus on a symmetrical, non-painful area (e.g. right shoulder if the left is painful) and amplify its comfort on the in-breath.
* On the out-breath, gradually restrict the painful area down to a small point, reducing its area of influence.
4. Practical framework
* To be practised after basic relaxation, alongside medical follow-up. Resource available to listen to again on francebleu.fr.

Frequently asked questions
Does sophrology help with pain?
Yes. Sophrology helps to manage pain better by releasing tension and by changing your relationship with pain. It is often used alongside treatment.
Is acupuncture effective against pain?
The WHO and numerous PubMed studies confirm the effectiveness of acupuncture in relieving chronic pain (back, knees, migraines).
Does TCM replace medical treatment?
No. TCM is a complementary practice that does not replace medical treatment. If in doubt, consult your doctor.
